Notice of demolition - Anglesea Power Station

The demolition remains on schedule for Wednesday 30 May between 9am and 12noon.

As outlined in the Alcoa Freehold Concept Master Plan, the industrial stack will not be part of the demolition.

As part of Alcoa of Australia’s decommissioning of the Anglesea power station and mine the main power station building is scheduled to be felled using controlled explosives on Wednesday 30 May, between 9am and 12noon, subject to favourable weather conditions.

Alcoa, in conjunction with principal contractor Industrial Demolition Services, has worked with government agencies including EPA Victoria, Worksafe and emergency services (Victoria Police, SES and CFA) to ensure all safety and environmental standards related to the demolition are met.

Preparations for the demolition have been underway for some time and have included a comprehensive twelve-month asbestos removal program. The remaining structure is predominantly steel which will be recycled. 

Public safety on Wednesday 30 May

The safety of all site personnel and the community is Alcoa’s priority. The power station is situated on private property and is not accessible to the public.

A 400-metre exclusion zone will be in place around the power station site during the demolition. Security officers will be stationed along the perimeter of the exclusion zone and all tracks in and around the site will be closed.  Security officers will also undertake vehicle patrols of the area.

The event may be audible in Anglesea for 10 to 20 seconds and is expected to sound like claps of thunder. It may generate localised dust within the exclusion zone that is visible for a short period.

Decommissioning of the Anglesea power station and mine has been underway since 2015 and has been subject to extensive community consultation.
